a sailor’s grave

you may keep your tidy plots of land
your marble walls, untouched by sand
the landlocked dead sleep sound within
but a sailor’s grave lies beneath the waves
where the brave sun’s rays grow thin.

you may keep your tears inside your head
they will not wake your vanished dead
through coffins’ walls won’t hear you weep
but there’s no walls or floors to hold your wars
where we sailors rest so deep.

you may mourn long at a place you know
black armbands, kerchiefs filled with woe
your neat-laid tombs are there to mark
but for we the free who have sailed the sea
it’s in she we greet the dark.

you may keep your tombstones white and grey
to show where they lie, the passed-away
where your funeral march has been
but a sailor’s grave lies beneath the waves
where the brave sun’s rays grow thin.
